Safety & Preparation

Water Safety

  • Water temperatures remain cold year-round (50-65°F) - hypothermia risk exists even in summer
  • Swift currents and hidden obstacles make swimming dangerous in many areas
  • Always wear properly fitted life jackets when boating
  • Check current water releases from upstream dams before entering the water
  • Stay aware of changing conditions - flows can increase rapidly

Hiking Safety

  • Carry plenty of water - temperatures can exceed 100°F in summer
  • Watch for rattlesnakes, especially on sunny rock faces
  • Poison oak is abundant - learn to identify and avoid it
  • Steep terrain and loose rock create fall hazards
  • Inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time

Leave No Trace Guidelines

Plan Ahead & Prepare

  • Check fire restrictions and weather conditions
  • Know regulations for your specific activity
  • Bring proper equipment and supplies

Dispose of Waste Properly

  • Pack out all trash, including organic waste
  • Use established restrooms when available
