About the Conservancy
The American River Canyon is a spectacular landscape where three major forks—the North, Middle, and South—cut through rugged canyons with depths reaching 2,000–4,000 feet from river to rim. This pristine watershed drains 2,150 square miles of the western Sierra Nevada and provides critical habitat for diverse flora and fauna.
Our Mission
We are dedicated to preserving and restoring the American River Canyon through comprehensive stewardship, effective advocacy, and community education. Our work focuses on protecting the natural, recreational, and cultural resources of this remarkable landscape for current and future generations.
The canyon's unique geography—transitioning from high-elevation alpine zones to foothill oak woodlands and chaparral—creates a mosaic of habitats supporting over 100 bird species, native rainbow trout, black-tailed mule deer, and other wildlife. The North Fork's 38 miles are federally designated as Wild & Scenic River, reflecting their pristine condition and outstanding values.
Our Approach
Stewardship
Hands-on habitat restoration, invasive species removal, and trail maintenance to preserve the canyon's ecological integrity.
Advocacy
Policy work and community engagement to protect the canyon from harmful development and ensure sustainable management.
Education
Public programs, guided hikes, and educational resources to build appreciation and stewardship ethics.
Community Impact
The American River Canyon serves as a vital recreational resource for the Sacramento region, supporting whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Our work ensures that recreation remains sustainable while protecting the very qualities that make this area special—its clear, fast-flowing waters, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural heritage dating back over 6,000 years to the Nisenan people.
