Our Programs

Our work spans three core program areas, each designed to address critical conservation needs while engaging the community in meaningful stewardship of the American River Canyon.

Stewardship

Hands-on habitat restoration and maintenance work that directly benefits the canyon's ecological health and resilience.

  • Invasive species removal targeting yellow starthistle, Scotch broom, and red sesbania
  • Riparian habitat restoration with native willow, cottonwood, and alder plantings
  • Trail maintenance and erosion control to minimize recreational impacts
  • Post-fire restoration including sediment control and native vegetation re-establishment
  • Water quality monitoring and mercury contamination assessment
  • Native plant propagation and seed collection for restoration projects

Advocacy

Policy work and community engagement to ensure the canyon receives the protection it deserves while promoting sustainable management practices.

  • Wild & Scenic River designation efforts for unprotected fork segments
  • Opposition to harmful development proposals including renewed dam threats
  • Land use planning participation at county and regional levels
  • Water rights and flow management advocacy for ecosystem needs
  • Collaboration with agencies on management plans and environmental reviews
  • Fire management policy supporting landscape-scale fuel reduction

Education

Programs that build public understanding and appreciation for the canyon while developing the next generation of environmental stewards.

  • Guided nature walks highlighting canyon ecology and cultural history
  • School field programs for K-12 students with hands-on science activities
  • Public workshops on topics like native plants, wildlife tracking, and Leave No Trace ethics
  • Volunteer training for restoration work and citizen science monitoring
  • Cultural heritage programs developed with Nisenan tribal descendants
  • Recreation impact awareness campaigns for boaters, hikers, and anglers

Program Partnerships

Our programs are strengthened through collaboration with agencies and organizations including Auburn State Recreation Area, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Protect American River Canyons (PARC), American River Conservancy, Water Forum, and local Fire Safe Councils. Together, we leverage resources and expertise to achieve landscape-scale conservation impacts.
