The Western States Trail now has a secured starting point. Robie Equestrian Park, the 160-acre horse camp east of Truckee, has been purchased to protect it for good.

Anyone who has followed the Western States Trail knows that the trail is only as secure as the ground it begins on. That ground just got a lot more certain.
The Western States Trail Foundation reports that it has acquired Robie Equestrian Park, a 160-acre horse camp and outdoor sport staging area east of Truckee, California. The park marks the start of the Western States Trail, the historic route that threads down through the American River country toward Auburn.
The property was previously held by the Wendell and Inez Robie Foundation. Its transfer to the Western States Trail Foundation is meant to do one simple, important thing. It ensures a consistent and permanent starting point for the trail.
That matters more than it might sound. A trail that depends on a leased or borrowed trailhead is a trail that can be interrupted. Securing the land at the very beginning removes that uncertainty. It protects the staging area where riders, runners, and stock have gathered for generations.
We watch this kind of work closely here in the canyons. The Western States Trail and the American River gorges share the same landscape and the same long history of people moving carefully through steep country. A permanent trailhead at Robie Park is good news for everyone who cares about keeping these routes open and intact.
