NFARA's 2014 Spring Thing Adds Afternoon Walking Tours
The North Fork American River Alliance's Spring Thing on May 31, 2014 added guided walks to Casa Loma Springs, Iron Point, and historic Dutch Flat, drawing close to a hundred people onto the land.

The North Fork American River Alliance held its annual Spring Thing on Saturday, May 31, 2014. That year the group expanded the event beyond its evening presentation to include afternoon walking tours.
Eric Peach led the first tour out to Casa Loma Springs and Iron Point. About 45 people walked with him. Later that afternoon, Jim Ricker led roughly 50 people on a tour of historic Dutch Flat. Many who joined the morning walk stayed for the second. NFARA called the turnout surprising and welcome.
The day closed with an evening program at the Dutch Flat Community Center, which drew more than 65 people. Eric Peach, of Protect American River Canyons, gave a slide presentation on the newly released third edition of The American River Insider's Guide. Paula Peach played hammered dulcimer and flute. The audience also saw a special showing of the video Wild and Scenic North Fork American River.
The tours proved popular enough that NFARA planned to keep them in the following year's Spring Thing. The group also said it was considering guided tours throughout the year, along with longer hikes into the North Fork canyon.
The Casa Loma Springs, Iron Point, and Dutch Flat routes sit in the North Fork country upstream of our own stretch of the watershed. NFARA's full recap is on its site.
