A Neighbor's Blueprint: Nevada County Ties Recreation to Resilience
Nevada County has a new master plan that links outdoor recreation to wildfire resilience and community protection. It is a model worth watching from our own canyons.

Good planning is a form of conservation. That lesson comes through in news from a neighbor to our north.
The Sierra Nevada Conservancy reports that Nevada County, California, has completed its Nevada County Recreation and Resilience Master Plan. The plan is meant to help boost the local economy while protecting communities.
The effort was funded by a $200,000 grant from the Conservancy, paired with county funds. Three partners drove the work. They are the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, the Nevada County Community Development Agency, and the South Yuba River Citizens League.
What stands out is the breadth. The plan spans eight focus areas. Recreation and tourism sit alongside wildfire resilience and climate concerns. That pairing matters. It treats trails and rivers not as separate from public safety, but as part of the same landscape that needs care.
We recognize this thinking in the American River canyons. The places people come to hike, paddle, and fish are the same places that must be made ready for fire and drought. A plan that holds both goals at once is a plan worth studying.
