The event is sponsored across the range by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, which coordinates cleanups throughout the Sierra Nevada each fall. You can find other sites at sierranevada.ca.gov/our-work/rivercleanup.
According to the Upper American River Foundation, the group has taken part for several years, with Bill Templin leading its Mineral Bar effort. Templin serves as a UARF board member and watershed coordinator.
Mineral Bar is a repeat site. The 2012 cleanup ran there on September 15, 2012. Earlier that summer, on July 2, 2012, volunteers from American Rivers cleaned the same stretch under Keri Rinne. Returning to one location year after year lets crews track what they have hauled out and hold the gains.
The Mineral Bar reach sits on the North Fork of the American, a spot popular with anglers and paddlers. What to bring is simple. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for a warm September morning, and plan for a few hours of steady work along the bank.
